Obituary

On August 17, 2021 Carol Villarrubia Thompson, loving wife and mother of two, passed away at the age of 70 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, after an extended eighteen year struggle with ovarian cancer. She and her husband James C. Thompson, lll, were married on June 6, 1975. They raised two children, a daughter, Jane Sullivan (Michael), and a son, John Thompson (Randi).

Carol was born in New Orleans on January 2, 1951 to Joe and Betty Villarrubia. She attended high school at Mount Carmel Academy (Class of 1968) then graduated from the University of Louisiana in 1974 with a BS in Nursing. She attended Mississippi University for Women earning a Masters degree with certification as both a Geriatric and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 17 years and as a Nurse Practitioner for 30 years residing in Bay Springs, MS.

Carol was passionate about people, her friends, and her patients. Most of all Carol was a born and bred New Orleanian who practiced her Catholic faith quietly. She also knew what it means to miss New Orleans and her beloved family. Her bright smile, loving heart and upbeat personality was infectious and endearing to her many, many friends. To know her was to love her. Carol's people skills, nursing knowledge, leadership ability and compassion were evident over her long and enthusiastic 47 year nursing career.

She was an incessant reader, a history buff most interested in the history of New Orleans and World War ll, and was a gifted student who never stopped learning. Her Kindle and Google were indispensable. She finished her career at the G. V. (Sonny Montgomery) VA Medical Center working in Home Based Primary Care. Her focus was veterans who served from WWll to the present. She delivered primary care to homebound veterans.

Her honors and awards include: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners "Mississippi Award for Excellence"; Mississippi Nurses Association "Pediatric/Neonatal Nurse of the Year"; the Garrett-Higginbotham Award "Outstanding Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Student." Honor societies include Sigma Theta Tau, Vermillion Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Magna cum Laude graduate of University of Louisiana, and Who's Who In American Colleges and Universities.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Jim, her two children, Jane and John and their spouses, and her grandson, Ryan Sullivan, two sisters, Jean Guidry, and Jeanne DeJean, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all part of her big New Orleans family.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, August 23rd, at the Bay Springs Cemetery.
