Doris
Thigpen
August 24, 1936 – July 4, 2022
Ella Doris Cole Thigpen was born in Moss, MS on August 24, 1936, and left this walk of life on July 4, 2022 at Comfort Care Nursing Home in Laurel, MS. She attended school in Moss and Stringer before going through most of the twelfth grade at Bay Springs High School. She married W.O. "Osburn" Thigpen, whose wife had died leaving seven children. They later had two of their own.
Doris most wanted to be remembered as a Christian, loyal to her Savior Jesus Christ, and loyal to Lake Como Baptist Church, where she served in many areas over the years. She had a heart for missions, both local and foreign and served as chair of the missions committee for many years. She loved her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Doris worked as an admissions and accounts management clerk with South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, MS where she retired. Later she reentered the work force as a ward clerk with Jasper County Nursing Home until forced to leave due to declining health. Doris fully enjoyed every opportunity to help patients and residents and often said she would have been a nurse had circumstances at the time allowed; she was well-loved by the patients and residents she served. It was her joy to show up with a bowl of her signature chicken and dumplings when there was sickness in the community. She loved tending her yard and flowers and hated the loss of ability to do these things as time wore on.
Doris was preceded in death by her mother, Daisy Wade Cole, son Christopher Daniel "Dan" Thigpen, stepchildren John Thigpen, Joe Thigpen, James Ray Thigpen, David Thigpen, and Wilda Harward; step-grandchildren Shasta Leigh Jordan, Stacy Hammonds, and Chris Evans; sisters Effie Jean Cockerham and Mary Ruth Mapp.
Survivors include daughter Susan Jenkins, stepson Billy Thigpen, stepdaughter Sally Carlisle (Joe), granddaughter Sarah Bowen, step grandchildren Jason Thigpen (Melinda), Hardy Thigpen, Sandra Smith (Jimmy), Paul Thigpen, Michael Thigpen, Roger Thigpen, Melanie Jacobs (Mark), Sarah Ewing (Jerry), Preston Harward (Jackie), Lisa Carlisle, Lori Calhoun (Gerald), Lindi Carlisle, Richard Thigpen (Nita), Shauna Nichols (Joe Paul), nearby step greatgrandchildren William Foster "Will" Thigpen, Allison Thigpen, Brent Thigpen, Aubrey Thigpen, Naomi Smith, Dillon Thigpen, and Savannah Thigpen, and many others who live farther away, special niece Faye Hull (Roger), and cousins Margaret Wildman (Frankie), Linda Grace Wade, and Johnny Ray Wade (Connie).
