Douglas grew up on the farm he called home. He graduated Bay Springs High School in 1960. He graduated Jones Junior College and Barber School at Hinds Community College. He joined the National Guard where he served for 6 years. He and Ann were married December 27, 1964 and began the journey called life. He and Ann built a home next door to his childhood home where they lived almost 50 years. He loved this land. He raised cattle and timber all while hauling thousands of hay bales in his lifetime. Felling pine trees was his unending project when pulpwood was accepted in Bay Springs. He would have his old log truck loaded down. Now, imagine the gears grinding and phone books for a seat. His work ethic became reality through sweat, determination, and hard work.
Douglas served the people as a barber for 54 years. He loved his work, always early and rarely missing a day. He knew the "news" of the town before the newspaper did, and shared it freely. He enjoyed the many kids, generations really, coming in to the barber shop. He has watch boys become men, and those men bring their children to sit in the same chair as their father did 25 years prior.
He enjoyed meeting with friends at Bayless Restaurant for years.
Douglas was always up for a laugh, jest, or the latest news of the county. He would talk about the stock market to the stockyard to anyone willing to listen. He went to church at Montrose Methodist Church where he attended every week. Friendships were forged in those places. "Being a friend is about what we give, not what we get."
Douglas also loved hunting in his early years. He, his brothers, brothers-in-law, his friend Alan, and his children spent many days at the camp house where they harvested from the hunt and celebrated with meals around the table. Lots of laughter was shared in those days. As he aged, he transitioned to just feeding the deer and watching them from the back porch. Lots of corn was thrown by the hands of his grandchildren as they walked the land together side by side. Precious memories that will never be erased!
He loved life and made the most of every moment. Never idol until sickness stuck! He loved his family, teaching values, and hard work. He was blessed by 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters whom he adored. They played, laughed, wrestled, and rode many miles on whatever had wheels and fuel. He will be missed tremendously by them. They had the hardest part watching their playful, fun filled Pawpaw deteriorate slowly, even in their youth, it struck them hard.
We will honor his life and his legacy. We give thanks to our Heavenly Father for giving us family, love, and time. So many in this journey never experience what we had. "In their heart's humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps, Proverbs 16:9
We are thankful for the promises of the Bible, as it states on Revelation 21:4, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
Douglas, we love you and are thankful for the role you played in each of our lives. We celebrate your life today and the journey we all had the privilege of taking with you.
Pallbearers will be Kolby Haden, Kevin Phillips, Jerry Lewis, A.B. Blackwell, Tim Bean, and Chance Haden.
Special music will be performed by Eddie Brady.
