Obituary

Herman Edward Sims, 88, of Bay Springs, Mississippi passed away, December 20, 2017 at Jasper County Nursing Home in Bay Springs, MS. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, December 22,2017 at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs. A celebration of life service will follow after visitation at Colonial Chapel. Reverend Sammy Stockman will be officiating. Burial will follow at Enon Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Enon Baptist Church, Attn: Jerry Sims, 1633 Hwy 528, Bay Springs, MS 39422 or Mississippi State University Foundation's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Mississippi State University. Pallbearers will be Ricky Tanner, Tommy Stroud, Will Sims, Eddie Helms, Shawn Stringer, and Scotty Sims. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Sims, Billy Helms, and Ricky Ruffin.

Herman was born February 3, 1929 in Bay Springs, Mississippi to Ras and Ellen Sims. He graduated from Heidelberg High School in 1947 and from Mississippi State University in 1952. He enlisted in the Army in 1952 and served his time in Fairbanks Alaska during the Korean Conflict as a cryptographer, earning the rank of Sergeant until he was discharged in 1955. He taught high school agriculture at Louin High School in 1956. On December 20, 1957, he married the former Grace Laverne Medlin in Bay Springs. He owned a sawmill with his two brothers, Harold and J.J. 'Bug' Sims. He also worked with Neely Brothers Construction for many years until he became a Board of Supervisor for District 1 in Jasper County for 12 years. He was a board member for Pat Harrison Waterway District for 15 years. He also served for 25 years with the Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District as a Commissioner/Chairman. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed farm life for many years. He was a long-time member and deacon of Enon Baptist Church.

Herman is survived by wife, Grace Sims, and son, Mitchell Sims of Bay Springs, his daughter, Dana Keith, and son-in-law, Donald Keith, of Tuscaloosa, AL and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. A special thank you is sent to the Jasper County Nursing Home Hospice for their loving care and support.
