Obituary

J.E. Smith, age 82, of Bay Springs, Mississippi passed away on October 21, 2026. Born on January 9,1944. J.E. devoted his life to his family, his community, and the work he believed in.

J.E. was the son of Eva Hollingsworth Smith and Richard Smith, and the next to the youngest of five boys born to them. Growing up in a hardworking Mississippi family shaped his character-steady, humble, and committed to doing things the right way.

He got his start building houses and chicken houses, developing a lifelong love for working with his hands. J.E. never lost that passion. Whether it was construction, repairs, or creating something new, he found joy in making things that were useful, sturdy, and built to last.

J.E. served as the Mayor of Bay Springs for thirty-two years, a remarkable tenure defined by steady leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to the people of his hometown. For twenty-eight years, he ran unopposed, a testament to the trust, respect, and confidence the community placed in him.

During his time as mayor, J.E. was proud of the accomplishments that helped shape Bay Springs into the community it is today. He created Bay Fest, a celebration that brought families, neighbors, and visitors together. He oversaw the construction of two new parks-Smith Park and the Children’s Park, built on the former NECO plant site and its parking area. The Children’s Park included a splash pad, modern playground equipment, a handicap wheelchair swing, and a new, up to date bathroom facility, ensuring the park was welcoming and accessible for all.

A lifelong entrepreneur, J.E. owned and operated two furniture stores, one in Laurel and one in Bay Springs. He also operated The Log Cabin convenience store and a used car lot, all of which became familiar and trusted parts of the community. His work ethic was unmatched, and he approached every business with honesty and dedication.

J.E. was also an avid gardener, with a deep love for watching things grow, flowers and vegetables alike. He planted beauty everywhere he went. It was often said that while he was Mayor, if you stood still long enough, you’d have a flower planted on your foot. His gardens were a reflection of his spirit: patient, nurturing, and full of life.

Alongside his business ventures, J.E. worked for many years as a respected real estate appraiser and realtor. He was known for his fairness, his dedication, and his genuine desire to help others.

J.E. is survived by his devoted wife, Terri Smith, who stood beside him in life and in work, serving as his secretary and partner in every endeavor.

He is also survived by his children: Kyle (Debbie), Stacey of Bay Springs, Lucus (Sonya), and Bethany (Jason) of Laurel.

His grandchildren include Austin and Natalie, Rusty and Sam, Sawyer, Jessica and Will, Joseph and Hailey, Holley and Mitch, Kloey, Genesis, Alexis, and Dakota.

His great grandchildren are Autumn, Pryor, Cullen, Hazely, and two-month-old Talia.

J.E. is also survived by his brother, Wayne Smith of Bay Springs, and five special friends who were dear to him: Coco, Lily, Oreo, Noah, and Roscoe.

J.E. will be remembered for his kindness, his quiet strength, his love of growing things, and his unwavering commitment to serving others. His impact on Bay Springs and the people who knew him will endure for years to come.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 26, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs with the funeral service to follow in the Chapel at 1:00 PM. A private burial will be held at a later time. Lucas Evans will officiate the service with friends and family serving as pall bearers.
