In 1931, John entered the world in Laurel, MS, the sole hospital-born child among 12 siblings. His life took a courageous turn post-graduation in 1950 when he enlisted in the Navy, where he earned accolades for his service, including the Purple Heart for injuries sustained when his Naval destroyer struck a mine in the Sea of Japan. Following his Navy days, John explored various roles, even working as a deckhand on oil rigs, an experience that cost him a finger joint, a source of much humor throughout his life.
In 1961, he tied the knot with Angie Bailey in Savannah, GA, and together they welcomed three children into their family: Tim, Carol and Peggy. John devoted years to the oil industry, serving both offshore and in the office at the Mayronne Company until the 90s. Retirement ushered in a new chapter, filled with gardening, travel with Angie, and bonding with granddaughters Emily and Erin. A man of deep faith and knowledge, John immersed himself in Bible study, particularly in prophecy and biblical history. His influence extended to the youth of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where he shared his wisdom and love. In his memory, John leaves a legacy of love, strength, and commitment. May his spirit continue to inspire those who knew him.
He is survived by two sisters, Yvonne Bianchi, Voncille Sullivan, a son Tim (Rhonda)Hammond, two daughters Carol Taylor and Peggy (Robert Crowell) Hammond, two granddaughters Emily Taylor and Erin Taylor, plus dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins.
