Obituary

John Paul Johnston, of Stringer, MS, passed away on May 25, 2026. He was born in Stringer, MS on March 22, 1933, to Robert Cecil Johnston and Elsie Ishee Johnston.

He graduated from Stringer Attendance Center in 1951 and attended Jones County Junior College. Paul was drafted in 1953 to serve his country in the United States Army in Germany and honorably discharged in 1955. When he returned home from service, he married Alice McCarty on August 11, 1955. Paul and Alice started their lives together on the family farm and began Johnston Egg Farm. He sold eggs to many businesses and people throughout the years and was commonly referred to as the “Egg Man”. In 1992, he retired from the egg farm and he and his son-in-law built broiler houses and he continued working on the farm tending to the chickens and cows until his health declined this past year. Paul enjoyed gardening, baling hay and tending to his cattle. He served ten years on the West Jasper School Board of Trustees, serving as President for six years. He was a member of Stringer Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Elsie Johnston, sisters Bobbye Johnston Dillard and Mary Johnston Tillman and son, Robert Jay Johnston.

He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Alice McCarty Johnston, daughter Paula Johnston King and son-in-law James King, grandson Kelby Johnston King, nephew James Tillman and niece Robyn Dillard Cogdell.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs, MS. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 pm at Providence Cemetery in Stringer, MS with burial to follow. Bro. Buddy Jennings and Bro. Josh Chandler will officiate. Pallbearers will be Scott Ealum, Bob Graham, Steve Ishee, Don McCarty, Glen Myers, Kelly Simmons, Kenny Simmons and James Tillman.
