Dewayne was born in Raleigh, MS, on June 21, 1958, in Dr. Coursey's clinic. He was the only child of Johnny Ray and Flora (Webb) Headrick. While growing up, he worked in the family-run Headrick's Grocery Store. Dewayne accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior as a pre-teen. Dewayne graduated from Raleigh High School on May 14, 1976. He wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps so he immediately went to work on John W. Mecom's ranch in Texas where rigs were drilling for gas and oil. Dewayne worked on various oil rigs for a few years. He was a mud-logger for Location Sample Service in Flowood, MS. Dewayne also worked in Raleigh at Kelly Hardware and at Caldwell Chevrolet.
Dewayne attended Jones County Junior College in the auto mechanic program, then later took academic classes leading to his A. A. degree before majoring in Petroleum Engineering at MS State University. It was during these years that he found the love of his life- Lisa Hughes (also of Raleigh). Shortly after they started dating, Dewayne told Lisa that he had re-dedicated his life to Christ in a prayer. They became engaged in 1986 and were married on May 14, 1988 in Raleigh. Dewayne worked twenty-five years for the MS Department of Environmental Quality traveling all over Mississippi doing inspections, compliance, and enforcement. He also trained many new engineers hired at MDEQ. Dewayne retired on April 30, 2015 having twenty-five years of service.
Dewayne is survived by his sweet wife Lisa Headrick; his loving parents Johnny and Flora Headrick; Lisa's parents- Dr. Verlon and Patricia (Reddoch) Hughes; Lisa's sister- Lynn Hughes Sorey and her husband, Circuit Judge Stanley Sorey, and their son John Sorey (beloved nephew). He is also survived by Uncle Charles Headrick, Uncle Billy Headrick, Uncle H. D. Webb, Uncle Frank Webb, Aunt Mary (Headrick) Edmond, Aunt Florence Meadows, Aunt Margie (Webb) Harris, Aunt Dulane (Webb) Harris; and several first cousins on both the Headrick and Webb sides of the family.
Dewayne was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents,
Whitman Barney and Gladys (Craft ) Headrick and by his maternal grandparents, Buford and Mamie (Hollingsworth) Webb.
Visitation is Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Colonial Chapel- Raleigh from 5:00PM to 7:30PM. Funeral Service will be Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Colonial Chapel-Raleigh starting at 2:00PM. Burial will be at Double Church Cemetery in Raleigh, MS. Rev. Anthony "Red" Bowen will officiate. Colonial Chapel-Raleigh are in charge of arrangements. (601) 764-2181
