Obituary for Lt. Col. Wyatt Ross Fleming (Ret.)
November 6, 1959 – December 6, 2024
Lt. Col. Wyatt Ross Fleming (Ret.), a distinguished veteran, devoted family man, and accomplished aviator, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at the age of 65.
Born on November 6, 1959, Wyatt "Earp" Fleming grew up with a strong sense of duty, integrity, and adventure. His passion for aviation led him to join the United States Air Force, where he proudly served as a pilot. During his decorated military career, "Earp" flew the A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly known as the "Warthog," during the Gulf War, demonstrating courage and precision in defense of his country.
Following his military service, Wyatt transitioned to a civilian career with FedEx, where he continued to pursue his love of flying as a cargo aircraft pilot. He retired from FedEx after a successful career marked by professionalism and camaraderie. However, Wyatt never embraced the idea of a traditional retirement. When asked to serve again, he began working with the F-35 flight simulators at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Wyatt is survived by his loving wife, Laura Rookard; his son, Nicholas Ross Rookard Fleming; his brother, Anthony Fleming; and his two sisters, Hope Fleming and Amy Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Ross Fleming and Gwinn Wilson Fleming.
Beyond his career, Wyatt will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his community, and his country; his quick wit; and his commitment to helping others. He found joy in mentoring younger pilots, spending time outdoors, and sharing stories of his adventures in the skies.
A funeral service will be held in North Pole, Alaska, with the date and time to be announced later. In addition, Wyatt planned to have a marker placed at the Old Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery, where his family will hold a future service for friends and relatives in the area.
Wyatt's legacy as a leader, protector, and devoted family man will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
