Mitchel Lafayette Nelson, 92, of Bay Springs, MS passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, MS. He was born Wednesday, March 30, 1932, in Pineville, Mississippi.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs in 22 E 4th Avenue, Bay Springs, MS with funeral services 12:00 PM. Burial will follow in Pineville-Leaf River Cemetery in Pineville, Mississippi. Bro. John Musgrove will officiate. After retiring from MDOT, Mitch enjoyed spending time with his wife, and grandchildren, gardening, fishing, sitting outside on his porch with his dog, "Dude" and mowing his yard on his John Deere lawnmower, aka "his motorcycle."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Margaret Nelson; his parents, Daniel L. and Sallie Harris Nelson; his brothers, Auzie Nelson, Alvin Nelson, Sam Nelson, Paul Nelson, Elzie Nelson and Cranford Nelson; and his sister, Lucy Eichelberger.

Survivors include his son, Gary Nelson (Carla); his daughter, Debbie Smith (Kyle) his grandchildren, Taylor Nelson (Stephanie), Collin Nelson, Jewel Gunther (Blaine), Austin Smith (Natalie), Rusty Smith (Samantha) and Sawyer Smith; and his great grandchildren, Braxton Nelson, August Gunther, Konnor Gunther, Autumn Smith, and Cullen Smith.

Pallbearers will be Austin Smith, Rusty Smith, Sawyer Smith, Taylor Nelson, Collin Nelson, and Blaine Gunther.
