Obituary

Phyllis Ann Woods Hemphill passed from this life into the arms of her savior, Jesus, on September 26, 2022, at the age of 83. She was born August 25, 1939, in Mansfield, Arkansas, and was preceded in death by parents, Relles and Hazel Woods, and brothers, Lerran and Gary Woods.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Kenny Hemphill; devoted daughters, Karen (Bucky) McNeil and Benji (Randy) Yelverton; cherished grandchildren, Lindsey (Kevin) Roshto, Jessica (Ryan) Gregory, Holly (Joe Frank) Alexander, Alex (David) Phelps, Sierra (Clay) Yelverton Blount, Landis (Kelsey) Yelverton, Christian (Emily) McNeil; and precious great-grandchildren Emma, Olivia, and Abel Roshto; Dawson and Madison Gregory; Isaac, Jameson, and Prentiss Alexander; Gracelynn, Elijah, and Caroline Phelps; Sawyer Yelverton; Kylie and Gunner Blount; and special niece and great nephew Mandy and Rhett Walters.

Phyllis lived her early years with her parents and brothers in Monroe, Oklahoma, until her marriage to Ken on July 6, 1955. They began their married life in Wichita, Kansas, where they both worked for Boeing in the Apollo/Saturn space program. The company transferred them during the 60's and early 70's to New Orleans, Huntsville, Cape Kennedy, and Seattle.

In 1972 they gave up those careers to move to Bay Springs, Mississippi, to be near family. Phyllis was employed as Financial Officer and later became Executive Director of East Central MS Health Care. She then served as both CFO of Mississippi Primary Health Care Association and Benefits Plan Administrator where she managed the group insurance program for 500 employees at 17 member organizations, until retiring in 2007.

Phyllis' family was the most important treasure of her life and she loved having gatherings and cooking for this ever expanding group. She and Ken loved the time spent with family and best friends, Arnold, Ouida, Zene, and Eva Lee Hemphill. They enjoyed playing golf and built a home on a hill overlooking Bay Springs Country Club where they devoted so much time and effort. She was an avid reader and passed many pleasant hours with Ken on the deck with a beautiful view of the club. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and loved her church family.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 30, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Antioch Baptist Church, 1611 Hwy. 18, Louin, with services immediately following the visitation. Burial will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  Bro. Steve Pouncey will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Roshto, Ryan Gregory, Joe Frank Alexander, David Phelps, Clayton Blount, and Rhett Walters. Special music will be performed by granddaughter, Jessica Gregory, and great-granddaughter, Emma Roshto. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Youth and Children's Fund at Antioch Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their thanks to caregivers, Judy Chapman, Norma Jean Shelby, Amanda Holloway, Dionne Hale, Gail Milsap, Victoria Perkins, and Enhabit Hospice nurse
