Thomas Colon
Smith
June 20, 1942 – June 19, 2025
Services for Thomas Colon Smith, who passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025, will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Colonial Chapel of Bay Springs at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Bro. Matt Crumpton will officiate the service.
Mr. Smith was born on Saturday, June 20, 1942, to Buren Smith and Christine Jernigan Smith of Montrose. Thomas was a 1960 graduate of Bay Springs High School. After high school, he was honored to serve in the United States Air Force. He then started his life long career with the pipeline where he had the honor of supervising one of the Alaskan pipelines. He was a lifetime member of the Jasper County Masons and a former deacon of his home church, Montrose Baptist Church, and a founding board member of Sylva Bay Academy.
After retirement, he enjoyed his love for gardening and carpentry that was evident in his beautiful yard filled with flowers as a result of a very green thumb, hand made sand stone walls and walkaways, placed by hand, his rose waterfall and many hand made bird feeders. His back porch was a favorite place, where you would find him sitting and watering his beloved hummingbirds. He always said, "Hang them on March 18th" as his mother always said.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Smith; parents, Thomas Buren Smith, and Christine Jernigan Smith; his sister, Bonnie Jean McCool (H.G); and nephew, Jimmy McCool.
Survivors include his daughter, Tonya Smith; his brother, Wayne Smith (Janiece); his sister, Annette Bergin (Hugh); his grandsons, Austin Smith (Natalie), John Hunter Smith and Chase Smith; his great granddaughter, Autumn Smith, his caregiver, Bertha Bradley and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Bergin Sr., Jonathan Myrick, Shawn Myrick, Harry Smith, Randy Pugh, Austin Smith, and Jackie Blakeney.
Thank you for the kindness shown to our family by station 2 of Jasper General Nursing Home who affectionately knew him as "papa."
