Obituary for Vera Lucille Graham Rogers

December 23, 1925 – November 20, 2018

Vera Rogers, 92, went to her heavenly home on a beautiful fall morning, November 20, 2018, at Jackson Madison County Hospital in Jackson, TN.  She was listening to hymns with her family as she slipped gently away. She was born in Scott County, MS December 23, 1925 to Eugene and Nora Graham.  She was valedictorian of her high school class before she attended East MS Junior College.  On a trip home to Sylvarena with her roommate, she met her future husband, Lester.  They married November 22, 1945 and made their home in Bay Springs where, except for a short while in Pascagoula, they lived their entire married life. She also attended University of Southern Mississippi studying business.  Mrs. Vera taught high school for six years in Jasper County schools before becoming the superintendent's secretary for West Jasper Consolidated School District, where she worked for 32 years.  As a member of First Baptist Church of Bay Springs, she also served as church secretary for many years. Later she joined Louin Baptist Church where she was an active member until 2013 when she moved to Jackson, TN to live with her son.

She was a prolific quilter and crocheter, making multiple pieces for all her children and grandchildren which they will treasure forever.  She also loved gardening, sewing, watching football, and doing word puzzles.  All her family, immediate and extended, as well as many friends will always admirably remember her excellent cooking skills.

Mrs. Vera is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lester Crowder Rogers, her parents, two brothers, and her oldest daughter, Barbara Rogers Gollott.  She is survived by her son, Kenneth Rogers (Lisa) of Jackson, TN and daughter, Connie Rogers Kader (Mike) of Hallsville, TX.  Her grandchildren, to whom she was lovingly known as MamMaw, are Kristi Rogers Brown (Dave) of Pass Christian, MS; Britton Gollott (Amanda) of Houston, TX; Nicole Kader Lomers (Josh) of Hallsville, TX; Erin Kader Bullock (Tim) of Fort Worth, TX; Kelli Kader (fiancé Matt) of Houston, TX; Rebecca Rogers Powers (Paul) of Bloomington, IL; and Austin Rogers of Jackson, TN; and one great-grandson, Asher Lomers of Hallsville, TX.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 24, 9:30-11:15 a.m. at Louin Baptist Church, followed by the service at 11:30.  Interment will follow the ceremony beside her husband at Holders Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Vera's memory can be made to Louin Baptist Church.
